Em 1970, a banda de rock The Byrds fez sua primeira e única música de tema ambiental. “Hungry Planet” (Planeta Faminto, em português) descreve um planeta que, de tão maltratado pelo ser humano, começa a se vingar. “Eles precisavam de bombas e tungstênio, então eles subiram, cavaram e me dividiram em dois”, canta o planeta ressentido.
Sentindo falta da sua “juventude”, oceanos limpos e de suas árvores intactas nas florestas, o planeta faminto não teve outra escolha a não ser mostrar ao ser humano a sua fúria. “Eu tive que chacoalhar, tremer e fazer suas casas queimarem.” Para dar um tom bem realista, os músicos do The Byrds adicionaram efeitos que simulavam o barulho de um terremoto.
