Um dos reis da música negra americana, Marvin Gaye também não ficou alheio aos problemas ambientais causados pelo próprio homem. Na canção “Mercy, Mercy me (The Ecology)”, faixa do famoso disco What’s going on, Marvin pede misericórdia e diz que as coisas não são mais como costumavam ser. “Para onde foram os céus azuis?”, pergunta. A música também chama atenção para um problema pouco questionado na época, a saúde dos oceanos. “Nossos mares e peixes cheios de mercúrio”, diz.
“Mercy, Mercy me (The Ecology)” foi regravada pela banda indie The Strokes, com participações de Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) e Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, banda do SWU 2010) e foi lançada como lado-B do single “You only live once”.
